  • Table with wooden base with metallic effect

The Blevio table by Ignazio Gardella joins the Molteni&C Heritage Collection, inaugurating a partnership with the Gardella Historical Archive: the first episode of a relationship based on research and exchange, destined to grow in the years to come. In 2015, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan, restructured by Gardella himself, hosted the exhibition on 80 years of Molteni&C in the furniture sector. Designed in 1930, Blevio is a table that Gardella (1905-1999) made as a unique model for his own family home, Villa Usuelli in Blevio on Lake Como. It is an extraordinarily harmonious and timeless piece of furniture, which today becomes a collective heritage; it combines the purest characteristics and an intrinsic simplicity. Gardella was already an established figure in the Italian architectural scene. Elegant and geometrically linear, the Blevio table is rich in design, in details that reveal themselves to the attentive eye. It is the result of a process that eliminated the superfluous, of a perfect synthesis between form and function, of the careful and selective use of the material that was to become its main aesthetic feature. It's a project that focuses on the essentials and eliminating decoration for decoration's sake. The upper part of the vertical supports is connected to the top by two wooden elements in the form of a capital. The refined and unusual game of counter-curves is also an element of structural stabilization: the geometric center of the semicircular ends of the top coincides with that of the vertical supports. The use of curved shapes responds to the need to emphasize the continuity of the top, avoiding interruptions. The original piece is clad in copper, a hard-to-maintain material for contemporary tables. The Molteni&C Research and Development Center has replaced the copper layer of the wooden top with a special varnish based on metallic powder that gives the same effect of solidity and artisanal shine, while giving greater resistance. As an alternative to the 320x96 cm (dimensions) varnished wooden top, a Breccia Capraia marble slab was considered; it was inserted into the aluminum surface, for a total thickness of 4 cm. In addition, under the supervision of the Gardella Historical Archive, the proportions of the original project have been adapted to the height of contemporary tables (h: 77 cm), thus guaranteeing respect for the original shape.
